Formatt Hitech FC ND 100x150mm (4x6) NDSEG 0.6 (2stops)
Formatt Hitech FC ND 100x150mm (4x6) NDSEG 0.6 (2stops) | Balance bright skies by two stops
Its 100 × 150 mm rectangular format gives you room to position the graduated density over the brighter part of a scene, rather than darkening the whole frame equally. That’s the defining choice here: the filter is made for controlling a difference in brightness across the picture. The NDSEG 0.6 rating corresponds to a two-stop reduction in the denser area, a measured amount that can help bring a bright sky closer to the exposure of the land beneath it. This Formatt Hitech filter suits landscape photographers and anyone working with scenes that have a clear bright-to-dark divide. It’s especially useful when you want to retain detail in clouds without letting the foreground become too dark. The 4 × 6 inch size is another way the format is described; the key is having a rectangular filter you can position to suit the composition.
Specialist Note
Positioning is the part to take your time over: align the graduated area with the bright zone, then check that the transition sits naturally in the composition. The 100 × 150 mm format gives you room to make that adjustment across the frame, which is helpful with a level horizon or a broad band of bright sky. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers balancing a bright sky against darker land, or to anyone photographing a scene with a similarly clear brightness divide. Its 0.6 rating cuts the brighter area by two stops, so it’s a moderate correction rather than a fix for extreme contrast. Keep your exposure set for the darker part of the scene, then judge whether that reduction brings the highlights into range.
