Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Balance bright skies and darker land
Keep a bright sky from overpowering the land beneath it. The Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 0.9 filter reduces light across part of the scene, helping bring a brighter area closer in exposure to the rest of your frame. That makes it useful for landscape photography when the sky is much brighter than the foreground, and for city views at dusk where buildings sit below a bright horizon. A graduated filter lets you place the darker area over the part of the composition that needs it, rather than darkening the whole image equally. The result depends on where you position the transition and how the light falls, so take a moment to line it up with the scene. It’s a practical option for photographers who want to manage that contrast while making the picture, rather than relying on heavy adjustments later.
Specialist Note
First-time users sometimes expect a graduated ND to darken the whole frame; its job is to hold back light in just part of the picture. Here, the 0.9 strength gives a three-stop reduction at the darker end, or one-eighth of the light, so I’d use it when a bright sky is pulling attention away from a darker foreground. Position the transition near the horizon, then check that it doesn’t cut across buildings or trees in an awkward way. The 105mm format is a substantial filter size, so it suits photographers already working with a setup made for that format. Its graduated effect can be less tidy with an uneven skyline.
