Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
A bright sky above a darker landscape can make it hard to hold detail in both parts of the frame. The Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 1.2 filter is made for that situation: its graduated neutral-density effect reduces light across one part of the image, helping bring a bright sky closer to the exposure of the land below. The ND 1.2 strength corresponds to four stops of light reduction in the darker area. That makes it a substantial correction for scenes with a clear difference in brightness, rather than a subtle adjustment. The 105mm designation gives you the filter’s stated size, while the graduated design lets you place the darker area where the scene needs it. It suits landscape photographers working with bright horizons, and anyone who wants to manage that difference optically while making the exposure. The transition needs to line up with the scene, so it’s most useful when the horizon is reasonably clear.
Specialist Note
This filter tackles a bright sky over darker land without forcing you to underexpose the foreground just to protect the sky. Its four-stop ND 1.2 strength is a strong correction: if your unfiltered shutter speed is 1/125 sec, four stops slower is 1/8 sec, so keep the camera steady for that kind of exposure. I’d use it for a landscape with a bright, open sky, positioning the graduation across the horizon so the darker area falls over the sky. The 105mm size is useful to know when choosing your filter setup, but the exact fit depends on the system you use. One honest caveat: with only a small brightness difference between sky and land, four stops may be more correction than the scene needs.
