Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Balance bright skies against darker land
Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter gives you a five-stop reduction across a graduated area, for scenes where a bright sky sits above a darker foreground. It’s aimed at landscape photographers and other image-makers who want to manage that brightness difference while making the exposure. The graduated design lets you position the darker area over the part of the scene that needs less light, rather than reducing light evenly across the whole frame. That makes it particularly suited to balancing a bright sky with land or water below it. The 1.5 density corresponds to five stops of light reduction, a substantial adjustment for scenes with a marked contrast between sky and foreground. It’s a focused tool for controlling that difference; it won’t brighten a dark foreground, so the final balance still depends on the scene and your exposure choices.
Specialist Note
With the graduated area positioned over the brighter part of the view, you can manage the sky without applying the same reduction to the foreground. The 105mm designation is the key size to match to your filter setup, so it’s worth making that decision before building your filter kit around it. For an open landscape, align the transition near the horizon and expose with the foreground in mind; the five-stop reduction can help keep a bright sky from dominating the frame. It also suits scenes with a bright strip of water behind darker land. Just remember that a graduated filter affects only part of the scene, so it won’t solve uneven brightness when the important highlights and shadows are mixed across the frame.
