Formatt Hitech FC ND 72mm Graduated ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Balance bright skies

Without a graduated ND filter, you often have to choose between a bright sky and a darker foreground when exposing a high-contrast landscape. This Formatt Hitech filter is made for that particular problem: its graduated neutral density lets you reduce the brightness of one part of the frame while keeping the rest less affected. It suits landscape photographers who want to bring sky and land closer together in a single exposure, rather than relying on a darker overall exposure that can leave the foreground too dim. The 72mm designation is the key detail when selecting it for a filter setup. It’s most useful when a bright area, often the sky, meets a darker area such as land or water; position the graduated area across that boundary to help retain detail on both sides. It’s a focused tool for uneven light, not a general-purpose ND for darkening the whole frame.

Specialist Note

A four-stop graduated filter can be too strong if the difference in brightness across your scene is modest; its appeal is having that substantial reduction available where the light is brightest. The 1.2 rating gives you that four-stop effect, while the graduated design keeps the rest of the frame from receiving the same reduction. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers working with a bright sky over darker ground: expose for the foreground, then align the graduation with the horizon to hold back the sky. It can also help with a bright strip of light above a darker waterside scene. Pay attention to where the transition falls in your composition—that’s what makes this filter useful, and where it asks for care.
