Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
The graduated neutral-density treatment is the defining choice: it reduces exposure across a bright part of the frame while leaving the rest more open. Formatt Hitech makes this filter for scenes where sky and land call for different exposures, but you want to keep both in one photograph. Think evening light over a shoreline, or a bright sky above a darker field. The 82mm size suits photographers whose lenses use that filter size, and the graduated area is most useful when the horizon gives you a clear place to position it. If branches, rooftops or a jagged ridge cut across that line, the darker area can fall over parts of the subject too. It’s a practical way to manage contrast at capture, rather than simply darkening the whole frame. Take a moment to align the transition with the scene before you shoot; that placement is what makes a graduated filter useful.
Specialist Note
A sunset sky glows above a dark shoreline, and this is where this filter earns its place. I’d line the graduation up with the horizon, then expose for the land: the 0.9 density reduces the brighter band by three stops, helping retain sky detail without darkening the foreground by the same amount. It suits landscape photographers dealing with a fairly clean horizon. Tree tops or rooftops can cross into the darker area, so watch where the transition falls in your frame. The 82mm size is for lenses that take 82mm filters, so it’s a specific fit, not a universal one.
