Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter | Balance bright skies and darker land
Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter gives a two-stop reduction across its graduated area, helping landscape photographers manage scenes where a bright sky sits above darker land. It’s suited to photographers who want to retain detail across that difference without applying the same light reduction to the whole frame. The ND 0.6 rating corresponds to two stops, so the effect is a measured adjustment rather than a dramatic blackout. Use the graduated section over the brighter part of the composition, such as an open sky, while keeping the darker foreground outside its strongest effect. This makes it particularly relevant for landscapes with a relatively clear, level transition between sky and land. It’s a focused tool for balancing exposure in-camera; the result depends on how well the scene’s brightness boundary suits the filter’s graduated area.
Where it helps
A bright sky can otherwise dominate the exposure, leaving the land below too dark to show the detail you want. A graduated ND filter reduces light in part of the scene, giving you a way to bring those areas closer in brightness. The 0.6 strength offers a defined two-stop adjustment for scenes with a noticeable, but not extreme, difference between sky and foreground.
Specialist Note
Near sunset, a bright band of sky above a darker coastline is exactly the sort of contrast this filter is made to address. I’d position the graduated section over the sky, then compose so the transition sits close to the horizon; its 0.6 density gives a two-stop reduction where the brighter area needs it. That makes it a sensible option for landscape photographers who want the land and sky to read together without darkening the whole scene. One limitation to keep in mind: a jagged skyline of trees or peaks can make a graduated effect harder to place cleanly than a simple horizon.
