Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm (4x4) ND 1.2 (4stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm (4x4) ND 1.2 (4stops) | Four stops for longer exposures
The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm is a square neutral density filter with an ND 1.2 rating, giving you a four-stop reduction in light. That’s useful when you want a longer shutter speed or a wider aperture without changing the scene. It suits landscape photographers and others working with a 4x4 square-filter setup who need more control over exposure in bright conditions. For example, lengthening the exposure can give moving water a softer look, while reducing the light can help you use a wider aperture for a portrait outdoors. Four stops is a practical amount of light reduction: enough to make a clear difference to your exposure choices, without pushing every shot into very long exposure times. If you want to manage daylight with a square ND filter, this Firecrest gives you a defined amount of reduction to work with.
Specialist Note
Four stops lets you use a shutter speed sixteen times longer than your unfiltered exposure. If your meter reading is 1/125 sec, for example, try about 1/8 sec with the filter, keeping aperture and ISO unchanged; it’s a handy starting point for showing movement in a stream. The 100 x 100 mm square format suits photographers already working with square filters, and gives you a clear size to plan around when composing. I’d consider it for daylight landscapes or scenes where a slower shutter helps show motion. One honest limit: four stops won’t create an extremely long exposure in every lighting condition, so think of this as moderate exposure control rather than heavy darkening.
