Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm (4x4) ND 1.5 (5stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm (4x4) ND 1.5 (5stops) | Five stops of light control for longer exposures
Without an ND filter, a bright scene can leave you choosing a fast shutter speed when you’d rather show movement. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 1.5 reduces the light reaching the camera by five stops, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture without changing the scene’s lighting. It’s a square 100 x 100mm filter, also described as 4x4, for photographers whose filter setup accepts that format. The five-stop reduction is useful when you want motion in a river or waterfall to soften, or when you need a longer exposure in daylight. It can also help you open the aperture in bright conditions. This is a focused tool rather than an all-purpose fix: how long you can expose still depends on the available light and your chosen settings.
Putting five stops to work
Start with the exposure you’d use without the filter, then allow five stops more exposure time. For example, a shutter speed of 1/30 sec becomes about 1 sec at the same aperture and ISO. That gives moving water time to blur while stationary parts of the scene remain defined. If you’re aiming for a particular amount of movement, take a test exposure and adjust from there; the filter gives you extra exposure time, but the result depends on the scene.
Specialist Note
This five-stop reduction won’t turn every daylight scene into a dramatic long exposure, but it gives you a useful, predictable amount of extra time without going straight to a much denser filter. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want softer water or moving cloud while keeping a practical exposure length. The ND 1.5 rating means you can calculate five stops from your meter reading; for instance, 1/30 sec becomes roughly 1 sec at the same aperture and ISO. Its 100 x 100mm square format suits a filter setup built for that size, so it’s worth matching the holder you already use. For longer exposures, support the camera to keep stationary details sharp.
