Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm (4x4) ND 2.4 (8stops)

Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm (4x4) ND 2.4 (8stops) | Make daylight exposures last longer

Longer daytime exposures let moving water soften into a continuous flow and clouds blur across the frame, even when the light is bright. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm (4x4) ND 2.4 is a square neutral-density filter that reduces the light reaching your camera by 8 stops. It suits landscape photographers who want to show movement in a scene without waiting for dimmer conditions, and anyone exploring long exposures in daylight. Its 100 x 100 mm format makes it a defined square filter size to match with a suitable holder. The fixed ND 2.4 strength is most useful when you want a substantial shutter-time increase; it isn't a variable filter for adjusting density from one frame to the next. The result depends on your starting exposure and the movement in the scene, so use your meter reading as the starting point and choose a shutter speed that gives the subject the amount of blur you want.

Working out your exposure

Eight stops means multiplying the shutter time by 256. For example, a metered shutter speed of 1/125 sec becomes roughly 2 sec with the filter in place. That gives moving water or passing clouds time to shift during the exposure, while stationary parts of the landscape remain recorded in place. Take a test frame and adjust from there: the right duration depends on how quickly the subject is moving and how much blur you want to show.
