Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter | Longer exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can leave you with a shutter speed that’s too fast to soften moving water or show cloud movement. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 2.7 filter reduces the light reaching your camera by nine stops, giving you room to use a longer exposure without changing the scene’s lighting. It’s a strong fit for landscape and architectural photographers who want to control motion in daylight, and who already work with a 105mm filter setup. The ND 2.7 rating describes the filter’s density; the nine-stop reduction is the practical figure to use when calculating exposure. For example, a shutter speed around 1/125 second becomes roughly four seconds after applying nine stops. That’s enough time to render flowing water as a continuous blur, provided your camera stays steady.
Specialist Note
Its 105mm format sets the practical terms: this filter belongs in a setup designed to take that size, so it’s worth planning the filter arrangement before heading out. The nine-stop reduction is where it earns its place in bright conditions. For a waterfall, meter without the filter, then extend the exposure by nine stops; a starting point of 1/125 second becomes about four seconds. A tripod helps keep the rocks and surrounding landscape crisp while the water blurs. I’d suggest it to photographers who want that deliberate motion effect in daylight. The trade-off is the long exposure: moving subjects will blur too, and camera movement matters.
