Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter | Make longer exposures in bright light
Without an ND filter, bright conditions can mean using a faster shutter speed than you want. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest filter reduces the light reaching your camera, giving you room to choose a longer exposure while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO. It’s for photographers who want to show movement in a scene rather than freeze it: think water with a soft, flowing look or clouds moving across the frame. It can also help when you want to use a wider aperture in bright light without changing your intended shutter speed. The filter is sized at 46mm, so it’s relevant to lenses that accept that filter size. Its appeal is straightforward: a substantial reduction in light, with no need to rely on changing the scene or waiting for darker conditions. Keep in mind that the result still depends on your exposure settings and the movement in the scene.
A seven-stop exposure example
If your meter suggests 1/125 s without the filter, adding seven stops of light reduction brings the equivalent exposure to about one second, with aperture and ISO unchanged. That gives moving water time to blur into a smoother-looking surface. The same calculation is a useful starting point, not a promise of a particular look: the amount of blur depends on how quickly the subject moves.
Specialist Note
At a 1/125 s meter reading, I’d use this filter to try an exposure of about one second for moving water, keeping the aperture and ISO the same. Its ND 2.1 density corresponds to seven stops, so it makes a marked change rather than a small exposure tweak. The 46mm size is the practical check: your lens needs to accept a 46mm filter. I’d recommend it to someone who specifically wants motion blur in daylight, especially for water or moving clouds. One point to bear in mind: seven stops is a strong reduction, so it may be more than you need when you only want a modest shutter-speed change.
