Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Four stops for longer exposures in bright light
Its four-stop reduction gives you a clear, defined way to cut the light reaching your camera. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 1.2 filter suits photographers who want to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture when the available light would otherwise make that difficult. It’s particularly useful for showing movement in a scene: a longer exposure can soften flowing water or blur passing motion, rather than freezing it. The 49mm size is the important fit detail, so match it to the filter thread on your lens. This isn’t an adjustable-strength filter; it gives a set four-stop reduction. That makes it straightforward to plan for, though you’ll want a different strength if that amount of light reduction doesn’t suit the conditions.
Putting four stops to work
Four stops means letting through one-sixteenth of the light that reaches the lens without the filter. As a practical example, if your starting exposure is 1/250s, the same aperture and ISO would call for roughly 1/15s with the filter in place. That slower shutter speed can record movement as a visible blur. Keep the camera steady for the parts of the scene you want sharp, and let the moving subject or water create the motion effect.
Specialist Note
Four stops takes a 1/250s exposure to about 1/15s at the same aperture and ISO, which is a meaningful shift when you want motion blur in daylight. I’d consider this filter for flowing water or moving subjects when that softer movement is the look you’re after. Its ND 1.2 rating gives you that specific four-stop reduction, so you can work out the shutter-speed change rather than guessing at the strength. The 49mm diameter is just as important in practice: match it to your lens’s filter thread. If your lens uses another size, this filter won’t fit directly.
