Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter | Make longer exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can make a slow shutter speed difficult: the scene gets too bright before moving water or clouds have time to blur. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND is a neutral-density filter that reduces the light reaching your camera, giving you more room to use a longer exposure. It suits photographers who want to control shutter speed in daylight, especially for flowing water, moving clouds or other motion they’d like to render softly. It’s also useful when you want to keep a chosen aperture in bright conditions rather than stopping down just to manage exposure. The 49mm version is for a lens with a matching filter size. Its seven-stop reduction is substantial, so it’s most at home when you deliberately want a much longer exposure—not when you simply need a small adjustment to exposure.
Specialist Note
Struggling to slow the shutter in bright conditions is exactly the problem this filter addresses. The seven-stop reduction gives you a meaningful shift: for example, a correctly exposed 1/125 sec exposure can become about one second if you keep the aperture and ISO unchanged. That’s a practical starting point for softening a stream or giving clouds some movement. The 49mm size means it’s intended for a lens with a 49mm filter thread, so match that measurement to the lens you plan to use. I’d pair it with a tripod for those longer exposures. It’s a strong reduction, so it’s less suited to situations where you only want a slight exposure change.
