Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Create long exposures in daylight
For soft, flowing water or blurred clouds in bright conditions, an eight-stop neutral density filter lets you use a much slower shutter speed. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter reduces the light reaching your camera by eight stops, with an ND 2.4 rating. That makes it useful when you want motion to show in the picture but the available light would otherwise call for a faster exposure. It suits landscape photographers and anyone working with scenes where movement is part of the image. The result depends on how long you expose for: water can take on a smooth appearance, while clouds can streak across the frame. It’s a focused tool for controlling exposure time, rather than a filter for changing colour or adding detail.
For a practical exposure starting point, if your meter reading without the filter is 1/125 sec, eight stops slower is about 2 seconds, keeping aperture and ISO unchanged. Use that as a guide, then adjust to suit the movement in the scene and the look you want. A shorter exposure retains more texture in moving water; a longer one softens it further. The filter’s purpose is to give you that extra control in conditions where a long shutter speed would otherwise overexpose the image.
Specialist Note
The 62mm diameter is the physical detail to match to your lens’s filter thread; get that right and you can use this filter on a lens with that size. Its eight-stop reduction gives you room to slow the shutter in daylight, which is exactly why I’d consider it for a waterfall or a moving stream. For example, a reading of 1/125 sec becomes roughly 2 seconds at the same aperture and ISO, enough to blur the water while keeping the rest of the exposure consistent. It suits photographers who want motion blur in bright scenes. Just remember, it records moving subjects as blur rather than freezing them.
