Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 67mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 67mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Five stops for slower shutter speeds
To blur moving water or show movement in a scene, you need to reduce the light reaching the camera so you can use a slower shutter speed. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 67mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter reduces the light by five stops, giving you more room to lengthen exposure in bright conditions. It suits photographers who want to work with motion rather than freeze it, and it can also help you use a wider aperture when the light is strong. The 67mm size is the key detail for choosing it: it’s intended for a lens with a matching filter thread. With five stops of reduction, a starting shutter speed of 1/500 sec can become about 1/15 sec at the same exposure, depending on the scene and your settings. That’s enough to make flowing water look softer or give moving clouds a visible trail, without relying on a very long exposure in every situation.
Specialist Note
The 67mm diameter makes this a specific fit, not a filter to pick by brand alone: match it to a lens with a 67mm filter thread and it’ll sit at the size you need. Its five-stop reduction is useful when you want movement in the frame but daylight would otherwise force a fast shutter. For flowing water, start from your normal exposure and use the five-stop difference to try a shutter speed around 1/15 sec if your unfiltered reading is 1/500 sec. It also suits outdoor scenes with moving clouds. Just keep in mind that five stops is a fixed reduction, so the final shutter speed still depends on the light and your chosen exposure.
