Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter | Six-stop control for longer exposures

Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter uses ND 1.8 density to reduce incoming light, giving you more room to use slower shutter speeds in bright conditions. It suits landscape photographers, people working with moving water and anyone who wants to show motion as a blur rather than freeze it. With less light reaching the camera, you can lengthen the exposure while keeping your chosen composition and aperture. That’s useful for smoothing the look of a stream or waterfall, or letting movement in the clouds register across the frame. The filter can also help you use a wider aperture outdoors when the scene is bright. Choose it when you want a substantial change to your exposure, rather than a small adjustment. For longer exposures, a tripod helps keep static parts of the scene sharp.

Specialist Note

Photographers framing waterfalls and rivers are a natural fit for this filter, especially when they want moving water to read as a continuous blur. Its 72mm size means it needs a lens with a matching 72mm filter thread, so that’s the key fit detail for your setup. The six-stop reduction gives you a practical way to stretch exposure: as a guide, 1/60 sec can become roughly one second at the same aperture and ISO. Use a tripod, then adjust the exposure to suit the light and the amount of movement you want. It’s a strong reduction, so it’s less suited to making just a small exposure change.
