Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 4.8 (16stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 4.8 (16stops) Filter | Create long exposures in bright light
Without a strong neutral-density filter, bright conditions can force you to use a shutter speed too fast for the motion blur you want. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest filter reduces light by 16 stops, giving you room to make much longer exposures while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO. It suits photographers working with landscapes, moving water or clouds who want to show motion in a still image, even in daylight. The dense ND 4.8 rating makes it especially useful when lighter filtration would still leave the shutter speed too short. It’s a substantial exposure change, so plan to calculate the new shutter time rather than rely on guesswork. The 72mm size is relevant when matching the filter to your lens; check the lens’s filter size before choosing it.
Specialist Note
“Will this 16-stop filter let me make a daytime exposure last several minutes?” Yes—its ND 4.8 reduction can turn a starting exposure of 1/60 second into roughly 18 minutes, before any adjustment for changing light. I’d meter the scene first, then calculate the longer time and use a timer for the exposure. That’s a practical approach for smoothing water or letting clouds move across a frame. The 72mm size matters when you’re matching it to a lens, so make sure the lens takes that filter size. This is a very dense filter, so it’s best suited to deliberate long exposures rather than quick changes between shots.
