Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 3.9 (13stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 3.9 (13stops) Filter | Make long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can leave you with shutter speeds that are too short for the motion you want to show. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 3.9 filter cuts the light reaching your camera by 13 stops, giving you room to use much longer exposures. That makes it useful for smoothing moving water, softening the movement of clouds, or reducing the light enough to use a wider aperture outdoors. Its 82mm size is for lenses with an 82mm filter thread. ND 3.9 is a very strong density, so this is aimed at photographers who want a substantial change in exposure rather than a subtle adjustment. It can turn a daytime shutter speed into seconds or even minutes, depending on the starting exposure. The trade-off is that such a large reduction calls for careful exposure calculation, especially when you're working quickly or the light is changing.
Specialist Note
At a bright midday shoreline, with a metered exposure of 1/125 sec, I’d use the Firecrest’s 13-stop reduction to bring that exposure to roughly 65 seconds. That’s the kind of change that can smooth waves into a calmer surface; a waterfall is another good subject if you want to show its flow. The 82mm size means you’ll need a lens with an 82mm filter thread, so check that against the lens you plan to use. I’d recommend it to photographers who specifically want very long daytime exposures. One honest trade-off: 13 stops is a lot, so compose and focus before fitting the filter where practical.
