Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) | Slow shutter speeds in bright light
Without a neutral density filter, bright daylight can leave you with a shutter speed too fast to show movement as a soft blur. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra ND 1.8 cuts the light reaching your camera by six stops, giving you more room to use a slower shutter speed in daylight. It’s a useful option for landscape photographers who want flowing water to look smooth, or clouds to show movement across a frame, without waiting for the light to fade. The 100x100mm square format suits photographers building their work around square filters. This filter is best when you want a substantial, fixed reduction in light for a deliberate exposure; it isn’t a subtle adjustment. If you already plan exposures around long shutter speeds, the six-stop density gives you a clear, repeatable amount of light reduction to work with.
Specialist Note
Six stops is a substantial cut in light, so this isn’t the filter I’d reach for when you only need a small exposure adjustment. For a bright-day waterfall shot, though, it gives you meaningful room to slow the shutter while keeping your chosen aperture. As a simple guide, if your metered exposure is 1/60 sec, six stops takes you to about 1 sec at the same ISO and aperture. The 100x100mm square size is a practical match for a setup built around that filter format. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want controlled motion blur and are happy to plan around a fixed ND strength.
