Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 127mm Neutral Density 0.9 (3 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 127mm Neutral Density 0.9 (3 Stops) | Gain three stops of exposure control
On a bright day, you may want a slower shutter speed to show movement in water, but the scene is already too bright for the exposure you have in mind. This neutral density filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you room to use a longer exposure without changing the look of the scene through a change in colour. It suits photographers who want more control over shutter speed in bright conditions, especially when motion is part of the picture. The 127mm size is intended for a setup that takes filters of that size, so it’s worth matching it to your existing filter arrangement. Its practical value is straightforward: reduce incoming light, then choose the shutter speed that gives the movement you want. It’s a focused tool for managing exposure, rather than a filter for changing the overall character of a photograph.
Specialist Note
Bright light can leave you with no room to slow the shutter, even when that’s exactly the effect you want. This filter’s 0.9 neutral density is a three-stop reduction, so a shutter speed of 1/125 sec can become roughly 1/15 sec at the same aperture and ISO. That’s a useful starting point for giving moving water a softer appearance; adjust from there to suit the scene. I’d point it toward photographers who already use a 127mm filter setup and want deliberate control in strong light. The trade-off is that it’s a large, specific filter size, so it makes most sense as part of a setup built around 127mm filters.
