Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop) | Make daylight work for long exposures
A 16-stop neutral density filter gives you room to use shutter speeds that ordinary daylight would usually rule out. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 4.8 is made for photographers who want to record movement over time: think water rendered softly, clouds stretched across a frame, or a busy scene with moving people blurred away. It can also help you keep a wider aperture in bright conditions when you want a shallower depth of field. This is a specialist-strength filter, so it suits deliberate landscape and architectural work more than quick, changing moments. You’ll need to compose and focus before adding such a strong reduction in light, then make a test exposure and adjust from there. For the right scene, that slower way of working is exactly the point: the filter lets you shape how movement appears in the finished image.
Specialist Note
The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 4.8 is built for turning bright scenes into long exposures. Its 16-stop reduction is substantial: as a starting example, a 1/1000-second exposure becomes about 65 seconds, before you fine-tune for the scene. That makes it well suited to smoothing water or showing cloud movement in daylight. The 37mm size is the detail to match to your lens’s filter fitting; it isn’t a one-size-fits-all filter. I’d recommend it to someone happy to work methodically, setting focus and framing before fitting a very dark filter. For fast-changing subjects, that much light reduction can be cumbersome.
