Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop) | Make exceptionally long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can leave you with a shutter speed that’s far too fast for the long-exposure effect you want. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Neutral Density filter cuts the light reaching the camera by 24 stops, giving you room to make exposures dramatically longer. Its ND 7.2 rating makes it suited to deliberate, extreme long exposures rather than everyday shutter-speed adjustment. Use it when you want moving water to blur into a smooth surface or clouds to shift across the frame during a single exposure. The very high density calls for careful exposure planning: a starting shutter speed of 1/8000 second becomes roughly 35 minutes after adding 24 stops, before any other exposure changes. If your aim is to preserve a short exposure, this isn’t the filter to reach for. It’s for photographers who want to explore the very long end of exposure time.
Specialist Note
This is too strong a filter for casual exposure tweaks, but that’s exactly why I’d point a long-exposure photographer towards it. The 37mm size makes it relevant to a setup using that filter diameter, so it’s worth matching the size to the lens you plan to use. Its ND 7.2 density represents a substantial 24-stop reduction: for a moving-water scene, meter without the filter, then calculate the much longer exposure before you start. Even 1/8000 second works out to around 35 minutes at the same aperture and ISO. That’s a useful reminder to plan the shot, not improvise it. Choose this when ordinary ND strengths aren’t enough and you’re prepared for very long exposures.
