Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 2.1 (7 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 2.1 (7 Stops) | Longer exposures in bright light
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 2.1 (7 Stops) cuts the light reaching your camera by seven stops, giving you more room to shape exposure in bright conditions. It’s for photographers who want to blur moving water or clouds, or use a wider aperture outdoors without letting the scene become overexposed. A neutral-density filter darkens the view without being intended to add a colour effect, so it’s useful when you want to change shutter speed or aperture while keeping the scene itself looking natural. This filter is best suited to deliberate exposure control: think flowing water, movement in a landscape, or a portrait made in strong daylight. The 46mm size is the key fit detail; match it to a lens with a 46mm filter thread. It’s a specific-size filter, so it won’t suit lenses with a different thread size.
What seven stops can do
Seven stops gives you a substantial shift in exposure. For example, a shutter speed of 1/125 sec can become roughly 1 sec with the same scene and exposure settings. That slower speed lets moving water blur into a smoother appearance, while fixed details remain defined if the camera is kept steady. It’s a practical way to create motion blur in daylight without relying on a very small aperture.
Specialist Note
Beside a sunlit stream, the water is moving fast but the light is still strong; that’s where this filter earns its place. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want a longer shutter speed for water or cloud movement, and to portrait photographers who want to keep a wider aperture outdoors. Its 7-stop reduction can take 1/125 sec to about 1 sec, so use a steady support if you want the rocks and banks to stay sharp. Do match the 46mm size to your lens’s filter thread. It’s a dedicated fit, rather than a size that will suit every lens in a kit.
