Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) | Four stops of light control for slower exposures
Without an ND filter, bright conditions can force you to use a faster shutter speed than you want. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra filter reduces the light reaching your camera by four stops, giving you more room to choose a slower exposure or a wider aperture. Its Neutral Density 1.2 rating describes that light reduction. It’s especially useful when you want movement in a scene to show: for example, a stream can take on a softer appearance with a longer exposure, or moving clouds can blur across the frame. You can also use the reduced light to keep a wider aperture in bright daylight when you want a shallower depth of field. This is a fixed-strength ND filter, so it won’t let you dial the reduction up or down mid-shoot. Choose it when a four-stop reduction suits the light and the effect you have in mind.
Specialist Note
Will this 55mm filter fit my lens? It’s made for a lens with a 55mm filter thread, so that measurement is the one to match. I’d consider it when you want a deliberate four-stop shift in exposure, rather than a filter you can vary as conditions change. For water in daylight, meter the scene, then try a shutter speed four stops slower than your unfiltered exposure; 1/250 sec becomes about 1/15 sec. That gives movement time to register while keeping the exposure comparable. It can also help you open the aperture in bright light. The trade-off is fixed strength: you’ll need to adjust your settings if four stops is more than the scene needs.
