Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop) | Create long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can leave you with no room to use a slow shutter speed, even when you want the blur of moving water or clouds. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Neutral Density 6.0 filter reduces incoming light by 20 stops, making very long exposures possible in conditions where a normal exposure would be much shorter. It suits photographers who deliberately use long shutter speeds to change how movement appears in a scene, especially in daylight. The 58mm size is for lenses that take a 58mm filter. With such a strong reduction, it’s a specialist tool rather than an everyday filter: you’ll need to plan your exposure around the scene and the effect you want. For a steady landscape with moving water, it can turn details that would otherwise look frozen into a continuous, softened flow.
Specialist Note
For a sunlit waterfall, I’d meter the scene first, then use the 20-stop reduction to stretch the exposure and soften the water. As a guide, a metered 1/1000 sec becomes roughly 17 minutes after 20 stops, so choose a scene that can hold still for that long and plan for movement in the frame. The 58mm size matters at the counter: it’s intended for a lens with a matching 58mm filter thread, so check the marking on the lens. I’d recommend this to someone who wants deliberately extreme shutter times; it’s less suited to quick, changing moments, where a 20-stop cut can make timing awkward.
