Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 67mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 67mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop) | Create very long exposures in bright light
The defining decision here is the filter’s 24-stop neutral-density strength: it cuts an enormous amount of light, so you can use long shutter times even in daylight. That makes the Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 67mm Neutral Density 7.2 suited to photographers who want movement in water or clouds to soften into a smooth blur, or who need to keep a wide aperture in bright conditions. It’s an extreme level of light reduction, rather than a small exposure adjustment. The 67mm size is the key measurement when matching it to a lens’s filter thread. For long exposures, take a meter reading before fitting the filter, then calculate the exposure with 24 stops added. The result can be very long, so plan the shot around the time required.
Specialist Note
Bright midday light falls across a moving stream, and this is where a 24-stop filter earns its place: it lets the water blur while the surrounding scene stays composed. I’d meter first, fit the filter, then add 24 stops to the exposure calculation; expect a long wait, not a quick shutter release. The 67mm size matters at the lens end, so match it to a lens with a 67mm filter thread. This suits landscape photographers deliberately working with very long exposures, and it can also help keep a wide aperture in strong daylight. Its strength is also its limitation: for ordinary exposure tweaks, 24 stops is far more than you need.
