Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop) | Create very long exposures in daylight
Bright daylight can leave you with shutter speeds too short for the soft water or moving clouds you want to capture. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Neutral Density 4.8 reduces the light reaching your camera by 16 stops, making much longer exposures possible without waiting for dusk. It suits landscape photographers who want to show movement in a river, sea or cloud cover, and anyone deliberately working with long shutter speeds in bright conditions. The 77mm size is for lenses with a matching 77mm filter thread. With such a strong light reduction, this is a specialist filter for planned long exposures rather than a general-purpose filter to keep on the lens. It gives you room to explore shutter speeds that daylight would usually rule out; the exact exposure still depends on the light and your chosen settings.
Specialist Note
For a sunlit stream, I’d use this 16-stop filter to turn a quick exposure into a long one: if your reading without the filter is 1/125 sec, the equivalent is about 8 minutes 44 seconds. That’s a practical starting calculation for smoothing flowing water, though changing light can affect the final exposure. The 77mm size makes it a match for a lens with a 77mm filter thread, so check that measurement against the lens you plan to use. I’d also settle framing and focus before making the exposure. This is for photographers who intentionally want very long shutter times; a 16-stop reduction is far too strong for everyday handheld shooting.
