Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop) | Make daylight exposures last longer
Bright daylight can make a deliberately long exposure impractical: even a small aperture may leave the shutter too quick for the movement you want to show. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop) cuts the light reaching the camera by an exceptional amount, giving you room to extend shutter time in scenes that would otherwise record movement sharply. It suits photographers deliberately working with very long exposures, especially in landscapes or architectural scenes where moving water or clouds can soften while fixed details remain clear. This is a specialist-strength filter, not a general exposure trim; its 24-stop rating makes exposure planning central to using it. Choose it when a subtle slowdown isn’t enough and you want to turn a bright scene into a long-exposure study.
Specialist Note
That much light loss is a real constraint: ordinary starting exposures can turn into hours, so this isn’t a filter for making a small shutter adjustment. Its 24-stop strength is the reason to choose it when you want an extreme change. For example, a starting exposure of 1/8000 sec becomes roughly 35 minutes; that can stretch cloud movement across a bright daytime frame. For water, compose first, calculate the long exposure, and keep the scene still while the water’s movement softens. The 77mm diameter suits a lens with a 77mm filter thread, so match the size to your lens. I’d recommend it to someone who wants intentional, very long exposures—not quick handheld flexibility.
