Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop) | Create long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can make it difficult to use a slow shutter speed: shorten the exposure and moving water or clouds lose their motion; open the aperture and you may not get the depth of field you want. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 5.4 filter cuts the light reaching the camera by 18 stops, giving you room to make much longer exposures. It suits landscape photographers, architectural work and anyone who wants to show movement in a static scene. Its particular strength is making very long exposures possible when the available light would otherwise keep shutter times short. Use it when that extended exposure is the look you’re after, rather than as an everyday filter. The 82mm designation identifies the filter size, so match it to the filter thread of the lens you plan to use.
Planning the exposure
Compose and meter before adding the filter, then work out the longer exposure with an exposure calculator or by counting the 18-stop increase. As a guide, a metered 1/250 sec becomes about 17 minutes 29 seconds after adding 18 stops. That can soften flowing water or let moving clouds travel across the frame. It’s a substantial change, so keep in mind that the scene may shift during such a long exposure.
Specialist Note
“Is the Firecrest Ultra 18-stop filter useful in daylight?” Yes—its strength is letting you stretch a short exposure into a genuinely long one. I’d consider it for smoothing a waterfall or recording cloud movement: meter the scene first, then add the 18-stop exposure increase and allow for the resulting long shutter time. The 82mm size matters when choosing the lens to use it with; its filter thread needs to match. This suits photographers who want that deliberate motion effect and are happy to plan their exposure, rather than anyone who needs quick, changing shutter speeds. At this density, exposure timing takes care, especially if the light or scene is changing.
