Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop) | Create very long exposures in bright light
Without a strong neutral density filter, bright daylight can force you to use a fast shutter speed when you want motion to blur. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 5.4 reduces the light reaching your camera by 18 stops, opening up the possibility of very long exposures in conditions where a normal exposure would be brief. It suits landscape photographers who want to smooth moving water, soften passing clouds or simplify a busy scene through motion blur. It can also help when you want a slower shutter speed without changing the look of the scene by changing your aperture. The 95mm size is an important part of choosing the right filter setup, so match it to the arrangement you plan to use. This is a specialist-strength ND filter: its greatest value is control over time, rather than a subtle exposure adjustment.
Working with an 18-stop filter
Decide on your framing and focus before making the exposure, then calculate the much longer shutter time from a meter reading without the filter. At this strength, even a daylight starting exposure can turn into a long wait, so a stable camera setup and a little planning matter. Think through what should stay still and what should move: water and clouds can blur, while stationary parts of the composition remain defined.
Specialist Note
At midday, with a base reading of 1/125 sec, I’d use the 18-stop reduction to turn a quick exposure into roughly 35 minutes, before any further adjustments. That’s the sort of deliberate, slow-moving image this filter is made to help you explore; it’s especially suited to photographers who want water or cloud movement to become a soft trace. The 95mm size is worth planning around: match that sizing to your filter arrangement before setting up, rather than discovering a mismatch at the scene. I’d also decide on focus and composition first, since a filter this strong calls for a considered exposure, not quick trial-and-error.
