Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop) | Long exposures in bright daylight
Without a very dense ND filter, long exposures in bright daylight usually mean stopping down or waiting for the light to fade. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Neutral Density 6.0 reduces light by 20 stops, giving you much more scope to use a slow shutter speed while the scene is still bright. It’s aimed at photographers who want to soften moving water, show cloud movement or create a more minimal look in a busy landscape. The 95mm size is relevant if your filter setup is built around that diameter. This isn’t a subtle filter for small exposure tweaks: 20 stops is a major reduction, so it’s best suited to deliberately long exposures rather than everyday shooting. For landscape and architectural work, it gives you a way to explore shutter speeds that would otherwise let in far too much light.
Specialist Note
Is a full 20-stop filter useful for daylight long exposures? Yes, when you want exposures far longer than ordinary ND filtration allows. The 95mm size makes this a specific match for a setup already based around 95mm filters, so check that measurement against the filters you use. For a sense of the density, a starting shutter speed of 1/1000 second becomes about 17 minutes 29 seconds with 20 stops, keeping aperture and ISO unchanged. That’s enough time to smooth moving water or let clouds shift across a frame. I’d choose this for intentional, very long exposures; it’s too strong when you simply want a modest shutter-speed adjustment.
