Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop) | For exceptionally long exposures in bright conditions
Bright daylight can force shutter speeds that freeze movement, even when you want clouds or water to blur across the frame. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Neutral Density 7.2 reduces the light reaching your camera by 24 stops, opening up very long exposure times in bright conditions. It suits photographers working on deliberate long exposures, particularly with landscape or architectural scenes where the subject can remain still while movement in the scene is recorded over time. The 95mm size is a key part of the choice: your filter arrangement needs to be designed for that size. This is a very dense filter, so it’s best approached with exposure planning rather than as a quick way to make a modest shutter-speed adjustment. If your aim is a dramatic, extended exposure in daylight, that extreme reduction is the point.
Specialist Note
“Is 24 stops too much for a daylight long exposure?” For many everyday scenes, yes; this filter is for when you want exposure times far beyond the usual range. I’d use it for a static building with moving clouds: take your meter reading before adding the 24-stop reduction, then calculate the new exposure. For example, a starting reading of 1/250 s becomes roughly 18.6 hours in theory, so changing light matters. The 95mm size also calls for a filter setup made for 95mm; it isn’t a size to choose by density alone. I’d recommend it to someone planning extreme exposures, not seeking a small shutter-speed tweak.
