Formatt Hitech Glass 100x100mm Supermist Black 1/4
Formatt Hitech Glass 100x100mm Supermist Black 1/4 | Subtle diffusion for a softer image
Bright highlights can look harsh, while a crisp digital image may feel too clinical for the mood you want. The Formatt Hitech Supermist Black 1/4 is a square glass filter designed to soften that look: it gently diffuses highlights and lowers contrast, adding atmosphere without turning the whole frame into a heavy haze. Its 1/4 strength gives you a restrained starting point, suited to portraits, backlit scenes and other images where you want a softer rendering while keeping the subject clear. The 100x100mm format is made for photographers who work with square filters, rather than a screw-in filter mounted directly on a lens. It’s a considered creative tool, not a correction filter for every situation. Choose it when you want the light itself to feel less hard, and keep it off the camera when crisp, punchy contrast is the priority.
What the 1/4 strength brings
Supermist Black is about shaping the appearance of light, not removing colour casts or protecting a lens from ultraviolet light. The black element helps keep the diffusion effect measured: bright areas take on a softer glow, while the overall image retains a defined, atmospheric look. The 1/4 grade is a subtle strength, so it’s a sensible option when you want the effect to be visible without making it the subject of the photograph.
Specialist Note
This filter won’t give you a clinically sharp, high-contrast rendering, and that’s precisely why I’d consider it. The 1/4 strength keeps the softening relatively restrained, so I’d use it for a portrait with a bright window or for evening lights when you want highlights to glow rather than look hard. The 100x100mm square format makes sense if you already work with square filters; it’s not a screw-in solution. Because it’s glass, handle it with care when fitting or changing filters. I’d reach for this when the character of the light matters more than maximum crispness, and leave it off for scenes where punchy detail is the goal.
Where it can work well
For a portrait, let a bright window or other highlight sit in the frame and use the filter’s gentle diffusion to soften its edge. For night scenes, place points of light in the composition to bring out the glow. In both cases, the 1/4 grade keeps the effect measured; use the filter selectively when you want that softer character, rather than treating it as an everyday protective layer.
