H&Y HD EVO-Series Black Mist 1/4 Filter Kit 95mm
H&Y HD EVO-Series Black Mist 1/4 Filter Kit 95mm | Softer highlights, atmospheric light
For portraits and scenes with bright lights, a Black Mist filter gives highlights a softer, more atmospheric look in camera. The H&Y HD EVO-Series Black Mist 1/4 Filter Kit 95mm is a 95mm filter with a 1/4 Black Mist strength, suited to photographers and filmmakers who want a gentler rendering of light rather than a completely crisp, clinical feel. Use it when you want point lights, reflections or bright areas to take on a softer presence in the image. It can be particularly appealing for portraits, where that treatment gives the frame a less hard-edged mood, and for evening scenes with lamps or signs in view. The 1/4 designation identifies the filter’s strength, so this is the option to consider when you want a visible mist effect without choosing a stronger grade. The result depends on the scene and lighting; it’s a creative look, not a general-purpose correction.
Specialist Note
This filter is made for softening the character of bright light in the frame, rather than trying to recreate that look later with blur. The 1/4 strength gives you a defined Black Mist effect while keeping the image recognisable as a photograph, which suits portraits and night scenes where you want atmosphere without making the whole picture feel hazy. For a portrait, include a bright window or practical light in the composition; for a city-evening image, let illuminated signs or lamps sit against darker areas. The 95mm size matters when choosing a filter for a lens: the front of your setup needs to take a 95mm filter. It’s a deliberate look, so I’d reach for it when softened highlights are part of the picture you want.
