The H&Y K-Series Soft GND Filter w/ Magnetic Frame ND0.9 is a graduated neutral-density filter that reduces light across part of the image, helping bring a bright area closer to the exposure of the rest of the scene. Its soft graduation makes it suited to horizons without a perfectly straight, sharply defined edge, such as hills or distant tree lines. The magnetic frame is part of the filter’s design, for photographers who work with a magnetic filter setup. Use it when you want to retain more sky detail without making the foreground unnecessarily dark. It’s a focused tool for landscape photography and other scenes with a clear difference in brightness across the frame, rather than a filter for changing exposure uniformly across the whole image.
Specialist Note
A soft GND can be awkward with a perfectly sharp, flat skyline: its gradual transition may extend over details you’d rather keep crisp. For uneven horizons, though, that softer blend is exactly why I’d recommend this version. ND0.9 reduces light by three stops at its densest area; for example, a 1/125 sec exposure there becomes about 1/15 sec at the same ISO and aperture. I’d use it for a bright sky above rolling hills, setting exposure for the foreground and placing the transition across the changing ridge line. It also suits a water scene where the bright area fades gradually rather than ending at a hard edge.
