JJC 82mm Gradual Neutral Density Filter
JJC 82mm Gradual Neutral Density Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
Keep a bright sky from overpowering a darker landscape, so both parts of the scene sit more comfortably in the same picture. The JJC 82mm Gradual Neutral Density Filter is designed to reduce light gradually across the frame rather than darkening the whole image evenly. That makes it useful when you’re photographing a horizon where the sky is much brighter than the land, and want to retain a more balanced exposure in a single frame. It suits landscape photographers and anyone who often finds that a clear sky turns pale while the foreground loses detail. Compose with the transition across the change between sky and land, then adjust your exposure for the scene as a whole. The graduated effect is the key here: it gives you a way to manage uneven brightness optically, while keeping the rest of the frame less affected than a uniform ND filter would.
Specialist Note
The JJC 82mm Gradual Neutral Density Filter’s best job is bringing a bright sky and a darker foreground closer together in one exposure. The 82mm size matters when matching it to a lens: the lens needs an 82mm filter thread. Its gradual neutral-density effect means the light reduction changes across the frame, so I’d compose a landscape with the transition running near the horizon rather than across an important subject. It’s suited to scenes with a clear brightness difference between sky and land; try it at sunrise or sunset, metering for the overall scene and checking that the horizon falls in the transition. It won’t recover detail that’s already clipped, so exposure still matters.
