LaCie 12big Desktop RAID Storage 72TB Thunderbolt 3 USB-C

LaCie 12big Desktop RAID Storage 72TB Thunderbolt 3 USB-C | Room for large working archives

The defining decision here is a desktop RAID unit built around a 72TB capacity: it’s aimed at keeping a substantial amount of data together in one storage system. That makes it a natural fit for people managing large working archives, such as photographers, video teams and other creative businesses. Its name also tells you the connection options: Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C. For a desk-based setup where a sizeable store of files matters more than portability, that combination of capacity and desktop form is the point. The LaCie 12big is best considered as central storage for a sizeable body of work, rather than a small drive to carry from place to place. One honest caveat: “RAID” covers different arrangements, so the name alone isn’t a reason to assume a particular balance of capacity, speed or data protection. Choose it for the scale of storage you need, and make sure your own workflow accounts for backups too.

It’s worth thinking about how you’ll use a large storage system before settling on one. Separate active projects from material you rarely open, and consider how much of your archive needs to be close at hand. That gives you a more useful basis for judging a 72TB desktop system than the number on its own. Also consider how the stated connection options fit into your workspace: the title names Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C, so those are the details to compare with the equipment you plan to use. For a shop-floor recommendation, I’d start with your actual storage needs and setup, rather than make promises about speed or RAID behaviour that the product name doesn’t establish.
