Marumi Grey Filter DHG ND32 52 mm
Marumi Grey Filter DHG ND32 52 mm | Five stops less light for slower shutter speeds
Without a grey filter, bright daylight can leave you choosing between a fast shutter speed and the aperture you want. This ND filter cuts the light reaching the camera, giving you more room to choose slower shutter speeds or a wider aperture in bright conditions. It’s a practical option for photographers who want to soften the movement of water, show motion in passing clouds or keep a shallow depth of field outdoors. The ND32 strength is particularly suited to scenes with plenty of light; the result still depends on the brightness of the scene and your exposure settings. For moving water, for example, you can use the reduced light to try a longer exposure and create a smoother look. It’s a straightforward tool for deliberate exposure control, rather than a filter for changing colour or contrast.
Specialist Note
On a bright afternoon, I’d use ND32 when I want water to blur rather than freeze in place. Its five-stop light reduction gives you room to try a shutter speed around 1 second instead of something near 1/30 sec, depending on the scene; use a tripod for that kind of exposure. The 52 mm size is the detail to match to the filter thread on your lens, so check the marking on the lens before choosing this version. I’d recommend it to someone who enjoys shaping motion or working with a wider aperture in daylight. One limitation: ND32 is a fixed strength, so changing light may mean adjusting your settings or taking the filter off.
