Marumi Grey Filter Super DHG ND1000 52 mm
Marumi Grey Filter Super DHG ND1000 52 mm | Create long exposures in bright conditions
Without a strong neutral-density filter, bright daylight can leave you with shutter speeds too short for a long exposure. The Marumi Grey Filter Super DHG ND1000 reduces the light reaching your camera, letting you use much slower shutter speeds while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO. It’s for photographers who want to blur moving water, soften passing clouds or give a busy scene a quieter feel, especially when the available light would otherwise prevent a long exposure. The ND1000 strength cuts light by a factor of 1,000, close to ten stops. That makes a real difference: an exposure of 1/30 second can become roughly 33 seconds with the same aperture and ISO. This filter has a 52 mm size, so it suits a lens with a matching filter thread. It’s a practical tool when you want movement to show in the final image, rather than freeze it.
Specialist Note
The ND1000 strength is quite a big step, so it’s less suited to small shutter-speed adjustments; its value is in making genuinely long exposures possible. For silky-looking water in daylight, take a meter reading before fitting the filter, then multiply the shutter time by about 1,000: 1/30 second becomes around 33 seconds at the same aperture and ISO. The 52 mm size is useful if your lens has a 52 mm filter thread, but it won’t fit every lens. I’d also compose and focus before attaching such a dark filter, since the view can become difficult to see through once it’s in place. For deliberate motion blur, this Marumi has a clear purpose.
