Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan 100mm f/2.8 II M42-MOUNT | A considered view for portraits and events

Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan 100mm f/2.8 II M42-MOUNT is a 100mm short telephoto prime for photographers who want a tighter, more considered view of people and moments. It’s suited to portrait photographers and event shooters who prefer to choose their framing with a fixed focal length rather than zoom. For portraits, the 100mm focal length lets you work from a little farther back and keep attention on your subject; at events, it can help frame a speaker or guest without crowding them. This is a lens for a deliberate approach, where you take time to place the subject in the frame. Its strengths are specific: portrait sessions and events, rather than situations where you need to change framing instantly. The M42 mount is part of the lens’s identity, so it belongs in a setup built around that mount.

Specialist Note

Late-afternoon light falls across a quiet portrait session, and the Trioplan’s 100mm view gives the subject room to breathe in the frame. I’d start at f/2.8 when you want to gather light and keep attention on a face; take care to focus precisely on the eye, because the wide aperture leaves less room for a small focus miss. Manual focus suits a measured portrait or a speaker pausing at an event, where you can set focus before the moment arrives. For fast, unpredictable action, it asks more of you than an autofocus lens would. If you enjoy working patiently and placing focus yourself, that hands-on pace is part of the appeal.
