PolarPro 135 Series - Black Mist Filter - 67mm
PolarPro 135 Series - Black Mist Filter - 67mm | A softer, more atmospheric image
Unlike a neutral-density filter, a Black Mist filter is chosen for the character it gives an image, rather than simply for controlling exposure. This PolarPro filter is for photographers and filmmakers who want a gentler, more atmospheric rendering of light in portraits, music videos, or scenes with bright highlights. It can soften the crisp feel of an image and give highlights a subtle glow, so it’s especially useful when a clean, clinical look isn’t what you’re after. The 67mm size makes it a specific fit for lenses with a matching filter thread; it isn’t a universal fit across your kit. The product name doesn’t specify a strength, so I’d avoid assuming how pronounced the effect will be. Think of it as a creative filter to shape the mood of a shot, not as a way to darken the scene or extend your shutter speed.
Specialist Note
A common first misstep with a Black Mist filter is expecting it to behave like an ND: its purpose is to change the rendering, not to cut exposure for a slower shutter. Here, the Black Mist designation points you toward a softer, more atmospheric look, particularly around bright lights and highlights. The 67mm size matters in practical terms: it’s for a lens with a 67mm filter thread, so match that measurement before planning a setup. I’d consider it for a portrait with a bright window in frame or a night scene with point lights, where that gentler glow can add mood. If exposure control is the goal, this isn’t the filter to reach for.
