Rodenstock Variond Extended 55
Rodenstock Variond Extended 55 | More control over light and exposure
Bright light can make it difficult to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture without overexposing a photograph. The Rodenstock Variond Extended 55 is a gray ND filter, made for photographers who want more control over how much light reaches the camera. It’s worth considering for scenes where movement matters: flowing water, for example, or clouds that you want to render with a sense of motion. It can also help when you want to work with a wider aperture in bright conditions. The amount of light reduction affects what settings are possible, so the result depends on the scene and your exposure choices. This filter suits photographers who want to shape exposure deliberately rather than simply accept the shutter speed that bright conditions dictate. Its purpose is straightforward: give you another way to manage light in the frame.
Specialist Note
“Is the Rodenstock Variond Extended 55 for getting longer exposures in bright conditions?” Yes: it’s a gray ND filter, so that’s the sort of exposure control it’s intended to give you. I’d start with the result you want, then set the camera accordingly. For moving water, for instance, try a target shutter speed of 1/4 sec and adjust your exposure to suit the light. The number 55 is part of this model’s name; I wouldn’t assume it describes the filter’s strength. It suits photographers who like to choose how motion appears in a frame. The filter helps manage light, but it doesn’t decide the exposure for you.
