Rycote Cyclone Windshield Kit Small (MZL)
Rycote Cyclone Windshield Kit Small (MZL) | Wind protection for location recording
Rycote Cyclone Windshield Kit Small (MZL) is a small-format microphone windshield kit for sound recordists managing wind during location recordings. It suits people recording spoken dialogue outdoors, as well as crews capturing ambient sound where moving air can distract from the audio they want to capture. Its purpose is specific: provide a windshield as part of a microphone setup when wind is a concern. It’s best considered for outdoor recording rather than work in a controlled indoor space, where wind protection may be less important. The black finish gives the kit a discreet look around a microphone on location. As with any recording setup, choosing a sheltered position when practical can help; a windshield is one part of managing wind, not a substitute for thoughtful placement. If you’re choosing between versions, the Small and MZL identifiers are useful details to match against the microphone setup you have in mind.
Specialist Note
Sound recordists working on outdoor dialogue or location ambience are the people I’d point towards this Small kit. For a 1-person interview, I’d place the microphone and windshield so the setup is between the airflow and the recording capsule, then choose the calmest practical position. The Small designation gives you a specific size to consider when planning that setup, while the black finish keeps the kit visually subdued on location. It’s also a dedicated microphone accessory, rather than a general audio item. One honest consideration: a windshield can help with wind, but it doesn’t remove the need to think about where the microphone is placed. The MZL name is worth keeping in view when identifying this particular version.
