Rycote Hi Wind Cover 5
Rycote Hi Wind Cover 5 | Helps tame wind in microphone recordings
Wind can turn a clear microphone recording into a distracting rush of noise, especially when you're trying to capture speech outside. The Rycote Hi Wind Cover 5 is a microphone accessory designed to help with that problem: it covers the microphone to help reduce the effect of wind on a recording. It’s worth considering for spoken audio recorded outdoors, such as an interview or a piece to camera, where gusts can compete with the voice. The benefit is straightforward: less wind reaching the microphone can mean cleaner, easier-to-follow speech. A cover like this won’t make a recording immune to strong gusts, and the product name alone doesn’t tell us which microphones it fits, so it’s best treated as a specific Rycote wind-cover model rather than a universal accessory. If it suits your microphone, it offers a simple way to address a common recording frustration without changing how you capture the audio.
Specialist Note
A wind cover can’t make a microphone immune to every gust, but the Hi Wind Cover 5 has a clear job: helping limit wind noise at the microphone. As a Rycote microphone accessory, it’s aimed at recording setups where outdoor air movement is getting in the way of speech. For an interview outside, use the cover when positioning the mic for the speaker; for a short piece to camera, keep the mic covered while recording so wind has less chance to dominate the voice. I’d choose it for that focused purpose, rather than expecting it to solve every noisy-location problem. Its name identifies the model, but not a microphone fit, so make sure it matches your setup before relying on it.
