Rycote Marantz PMD620/Tascam DR-1 Mini Windjammer
Rycote Marantz PMD620/Tascam DR-1 Mini Windjammer | Help reduce wind noise outdoors
Wind buffeting can make an otherwise clear portable recording hard to listen to. The Rycote Mini Windjammer is a microphone accessory for the Marantz PMD620 and Tascam DR-1, intended to help reduce wind noise when recording in breezy conditions. Its model-specific name is useful here: it identifies the recorders this windjammer is made for, rather than suggesting a universal fit. The “Mini” designation points to a compact accessory for these portable recorders, so it’s suited to people who want a simple way to address wind at the microphone without changing their recorder. Use it when capturing spoken notes, interviews or ambient sound outdoors, where air movement can interfere with the recording. It can help tame that problem, though it shouldn’t be treated as a way to eliminate every trace of wind in strong gusts. The colour is black.
Specialist Note
Does this Mini Windjammer fit a Marantz PMD620 or Tascam DR-1? Yes; those are the two recorder models named for this accessory. The “Mini” name matters because this is a small, recorder-specific wind cover, not a general-purpose microphone accessory. I’d consider it for outdoor voice recordings or location sound: use it when a light breeze is reaching the microphone and you want less wind rumble in the take. It’s black, so it stays visually unobtrusive on the recorder. One practical limit: a windjammer can help with moving air, but it can’t make a very exposed recording position behave like a sheltered one. For the named recorders, it’s a focused accessory for that particular nuisance.
