Rycote Windjammer WJ 3
Rycote Windjammer WJ 3 | Help reduce wind noise in recordings
The Rycote Windjammer WJ 3 is a microphone accessory for recording when moving air can interfere with your sound. Its job is straightforward: help reduce wind noise at the microphone, so speech and ambient audio are easier to hear in breezy conditions. It’s most relevant to people recording outdoors, such as interviewers gathering spoken audio or filmmakers capturing the sound of a location. A windjammer can help with gusts, but it won’t remove every unwanted sound; traffic, handling noise and very strong wind still call for attention to recording position and conditions. Think of it as a practical aid for outdoor recording, rather than a way to make any microphone immune to wind. If you’re choosing accessories for a microphone setup, the WJ 3 is specifically the wind-protection part of that setup.
Specialist Note
First-time buyers sometimes expect a wind cover to make outdoor audio completely clean; the Windjammer WJ 3 is there to reduce wind noise, not to silence everything around the microphone. I’d consider it for outdoor interviews or location sound where a breeze could distract from the voice or atmosphere you’re recording. Keep the microphone aimed at the sound you want, and choose a sheltered position when the wind picks up; the windjammer can help, but placement still matters. The name tells you its purpose, while WJ 3 identifies this particular Rycote model. It’s a focused accessory, so its benefit is most apparent when wind is the problem you’re trying to manage.
