Samyang AF 14-24mm f/2.8 FE

Samyang AF 14-24mm f/2.8 FE - a fast ultra-wide zoom that takes 77mm filters

Broad mountain views, dramatic architecture and open night skies all call for a wide frame. The Samyang AF 14-24mm f/2.8 FE is a full-frame Sony FE zoom that pairs its 14-24mm range with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, so the lens stays bright as you change focal length. At 14mm, its 114° angle of view takes in a sweeping scene; at 24mm, the view narrows to 84° for a more selective composition. That range makes it useful for landscapes and travel, while the bright aperture is particularly welcome for astrophotography and other low-light scenes. A notable detail is that this ultra-wide zoom accepts standard 77mm filters. That means you can use compatible front filters such as polarising or ND filters, rather than relying on a specialised filter system. The lens was developed jointly by Samyang and Schneider-Kreuznach, and its optical design combines 15 elements in 11 groups, including aspherical, high-refractive and extra-low-dispersion glass. The aim is to control optical flaws while keeping detail crisp across the frame. Autofocus covers the full zoom range, and the lens can focus as close as 18cm for foreground details that add depth to a wide landscape. At 445g and 88.8mm long, it also stays relatively compact for a constant-f/2.8 full-frame ultra-wide zoom. For Sony FE users who photograph wide scenes in changing light, it's a capable option that balances a broad view, filter flexibility and a bright aperture in one lens.

What the glass does

• 14-24mm zoom range: Work from an expansive ultra-wide view to a tighter wide-angle composition without changing lenses. That flexibility is handy when you’re framing buildings, landscapes or travel scenes.
• 77mm filter thread: The lens accepts standard front filters, including compatible ND and polarising filters. You can add those effects without needing a specialised filter holder.
• Close focus to 18cm: The minimum focusing distance stays at 18cm throughout the zoom range. Focus close on a foreground subject to give a wide scene a stronger sense of depth.
• Up to 0.26x magnification: The close-focus capability produces a useful degree of magnification for an ultra-wide zoom. Small foreground details can take up more of the frame while the surrounding scene remains visible.
• 15 elements in 11 groups: The optical design includes three aspherical, five high-refractive and three extra-low-dispersion elements. These specialised elements are intended to manage optical aberrations, including chromatic aberration and distortion.
• 445g, 88.8mm long: Its compact dimensions and relatively low weight make it easier to pack alongside other travel or landscape equipment than a bulkier lens.
• Linear STM autofocus: The stepping motor drives autofocus quietly and quickly, useful when you need to focus without drawing attention to the lens in a quiet setting.
• Weather-resistant construction: The lens is protected against dust, water droplets, light rain and snow. That offers added reassurance when outdoor conditions turn less predictable.

On your camera

The Sony FE mount is for Sony cameras with an FE lens mount, and the lens covers a full-frame sensor. It also works on Sony APS-C bodies with the same mount; there, the 14-24mm range gives a full-frame-equivalent field of view of approximately 21-36mm. Autofocus is built in, so the lens can focus automatically with compatible camera bodies.
