Saramonic Vmic Recorder VideoMic
Saramonic Vmic Recorder VideoMic | Record WAV audio on camera
A spoken introduction, interview or piece of event footage is rolling, and the Saramonic Vmic Recorder VideoMic gives your camera a way to record audio directly to a memory card. It records WAV files at 16-bit / 48 kHz to a MicroSDHC card, with support for cards up to 32GB. That gives DSLR and camcorder users a self-contained audio recorder in a microphone format, rather than relying only on the camera’s audio track. For a sit-down interview, it can record the voices as a separate WAV file; for a family video or a short piece of event coverage, it provides the same format and recording rate. The key distinction is that the Vmic Recorder has its own recording function as well as a cable connection for the camera’s audio input. That combination makes sense when you want a card-based recording alongside your camera workflow. The menus are operated through an LCD display, and a stereo headphone output lets you listen to incoming audio while recording. It’s a focused tool for video makers who want onboard audio recording and monitoring in one microphone.
Recording and Monitoring
- WAV recording at 16-bit / 48 kHz: This recording format and rate are suited to capturing dialogue for video projects. The files are recorded directly to a MicroSDHC card.
- MicroSDHC support up to 32GB: The recorder accepts cards up to this capacity. It’s a useful limit to keep in mind when choosing the card for a project.
- LCD display and menu: The display presents the recorder’s menu, with a layout described as easy to read. You can operate the recording functions from the unit itself.
- Stereo headphone output: Connect headphones to monitor incoming audio as you record. That gives you a way to listen to the signal rather than relying solely on the camera display.
- Detachable 3.5mm camera cable: The supplied connection type links the recorder to a camera’s audio input. Being removable also means the cable can be detached from the microphone when it isn’t connected to the camera.
- Standard-size camera shoe: The Vmic Recorder uses a standard-size shoe fitting for mounting on a camera. Its lightweight metal construction keeps the unit’s body light.
Specialist Note
The lightweight metal body keeps the Vmic Recorder from feeling like a heavy block on top of a camera. I’d point it out to anyone filming interviews or spoken pieces with a DSLR or camcorder: the built-in recorder captures WAV at 16-bit / 48 kHz, and the headphone output lets you listen to the incoming sound while you work. For an interview, mount it on the camera shoe, connect the detachable 3.5mm cable to the camera’s audio input, and monitor through headphones as you record. The onboard MicroSDHC recording gives you a separate card-based audio file for your edit. Do bear in mind the supported card capacity tops out at 32GB, so this is a compact recorder rather than a high-capacity audio archive. It’s a specific, tidy setup for video makers who want recording and monitoring at the camera.
