Schneider CFG Rhodium FSND 1.5 4x5.65
Schneider CFG Rhodium FSND 1.5 4x5.65 | Five stops of controlled light reduction
The defining optical choice is ND 1.5: a five-stop reduction that gives you room to choose a slower shutter or wider aperture when the scene is bright. Schneider’s CFG Rhodium FSND is a neutral-density filter in a 4x5.65 format, for crews already working with that filter size. It suits cinematographers who want a substantial, known reduction in light for exterior scenes or controlled setups, while keeping exposure decisions in their hands. A five-stop cut can help retain motion blur in daylight or let you open the iris without changing the lighting; the result still depends on the scene and exposure you choose. This filter is best approached as a defined step in your exposure plan, rather than a variable adjustment. Its appeal is straightforward: the 1.5 density and 4x5.65 format give you clear numbers to plan around before the camera is set up.
Specialist Note
Exposure planning stays quick with this density: ND 1.5 means five stops, so at unchanged aperture and ISO, 1/30 second becomes roughly one second. That gives you a practical route to soft, continuous movement in a daylight stream, or visible blur in a slow walking shot; choose the shutter time first, then account for the filter’s five-stop cut. The 4x5.65 format makes setup dependent on having a rig arranged for that size, so it’s worth planning the filter position before the camera is built. I’d recommend it to crews who need this exact fixed reduction. It won’t give you an in-between density on its own.
